The covered Buddhist Bihar- The palace of Raja Harishchandra

The palace of Raja Harishchandra is an archaeological site located in the Savar Upazila of Dhaka district of Bangladesh. It is also known as Raja Harishchandra's mound, Raja Harishchandra's house, Raja Harishchandra's Vita etc.

The site is located at Majidpur (east of Savar Bazar bus stand) in Rajasan area of Savar Municipality, under Savar Upazila.

The Rajbari of Raja Harishchandra was buried under the ground till the end of the nineteenth century. Local people identified this place as the Rajbari mound. In 1918, near the Rajbari-mound, rajasan, Nalini Kanta Bhattasali conducted an archaeological excavation. As a result of this excavation, some of the sites related to Buddhism's religion and culture and the monumental coins of Gupta dynasty were discovered. In this, the identity of the Buddhist idols is found. According to this, the excavation was done in the palace-palace of Harishchandra king in 1990-1991.

In spite of being famous as the place of present-day Majidpur, this region was very important in ancient times. According to some archaeological experts, the capital of the "Sarbesyara Rajya" under the rule of Pala dynasty King Harishchandra was located on the bank of the ancient progeny or the existing Bansi River, was about 24 km northwest of Dhaka (distance from Gulistan Zero point distance from Gulistan). The name of that capital was previously named as "Samvar" and the name of Savar originally origin after the name of Samvar. In the 7th-8th century AD, the palace-hall of King Harishchandra of the Samveswara kingdom of the state was located at Majidpur in Savar. It is also understood that the importance of this area of Savar reflects the place mentioned on Rennel's map. Famous historian and geographer James Rennell surveyed the area in Savar in 1767 and made the relevant part of the map.

In 1990-1991, Raja Harishchandra's mound was exposed as a medium-sized monument and a broken Buddhist monastery in the south. In the seventh century BCE, This Buddhist Bihar was used as a center of civilization of Buddhist Religion. Excavation at Harishchandra's palace-mound, A number of reconstructions and multiple floor marks can be found in the exposed Bihar. Four stages in Bihar's architecture are understandable. Four-layer construction structures are available, it is understood that it was used for a long time. At the time of excavation, from the upper level of Bihar, the coins of gold and silver of the 7th-8th century AD and the eighth-ninth century bronze medieval Buddha and Tantrik statues have been discovered. It can be predicted to have those Many bronze statues those found there It was a center of Mahayajani Buddhist ideology. There are also various types of patterns found there. The sculptures, such as the Dhokti clad, the crown, the bangles, the rays, the waistband, and the statue of Lokeshwar-Vishnu, Padmapani, Dhyani Buddha, Avalokiteshwar, and Prammaita are found there. These artifacts are considered from 7th to 8th centuries AD Expert estimates. Presently these patterns are preserved in the National Museum of Bangladesh.
