Traveling through Biblical places in Israel, Palestina and Jordan #5 - Capernaum

in #biblical-places7 years ago (edited)

In 2017, I visited Israel, Palestina and Jordan and will share here some of my pictures from Biblical places related to our Savior Jesus Christ and some other major Biblical characters and events.

Our last stop was a town Cana and today, we will visit town Capernaum in Galilee where Jesus preached, made many miracles and also found some of His disciples. The picture below shows the remaining of the town and Peter's house under the the new building on the pillars.

Capernaum

  • location: north of the Sea of Galilee between Gennesaret and Bethsaida, about 150 km north from Jerusalem and 70 km from Nazareth
  • name origin: Kfaur Nahum means Nahum's village, Nahum means comforter or penitent
  • place importance:
    • town is called The town of Jesus as it is considered a center of His ministry
    • multiple Bible references, major place of Jesus's miracles and preaching, yet most people didn't repent
    • some apostles hometown (Peter and Andrew)
    • the town mentioned in all four gospels
  • personal observation
    • the town is not a inhabited town today, there are just two tourist sites and some church buildings

Bible references

New testament

And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim
-- Mattheew 4:13

He came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. He was teaching them on the Sabbath day, and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word was with authority. And in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon, and he shouted with a loud voice, saying, "Ah. what have we to do with you, Jesus, Nazarene? Have you come to destroy us? I know you who you are: the Holy One of God." Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him." When the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm.
-- Luke 4:31-36

And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, you will be brought down to hell. For if the mighty works had been done in Sodom which were done in you, it would have remained until this day.
-- Matthew 11:23

As with any location like that with biblical significance, I'm sure it's humbling to think about Jesus and the disciples walking on those streets to those locations. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, it's very special and humbling exactly as you write. Biblical places that lived before "only" in your head and heart are now available to other senses. It's revelationary in some way.

I know some people who visited Ephesus in Turkey recently, and they said the same thing. I hope to take a trip to see some of these places some day.

Thank you for sharing these interesting photos.
