That depends. I try to read the Bible with the understanding that it was originally intended to have. Some of it is definitely supposed to be taken symbolically but the vast majority of the Bible should be read literally.

I agree, there's a vast amount of historic information that we know is fact such as ancient cities, wars, rulers etc so there's a ton to take as it reads. However, I think stories that contradict undoubtful science should always be a sign that the reader needs to have some guidance from above to gain the wisdom between the lines.
