BIBLE STORIES # 32 - How Jesus Defeated Satan
After the baptism of God, the Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness, so that He would fight with Satan. Forty days Jesus did not eat anything, and at the end of Him hungered. And the devil asked Him:
"You are God's Son!" Why do not you turn these stones into bread?
But Jesus answered:
- In the Holy Scripture it says: a person needs not only bread, but every word of God.
Then Satan transferred Him to Jerusalem and placed it on the very dome of the Temple.
"You are the Son of God, are not you?" Why do not you rush from here down - the angels will immediately pick you up and not let you break!
But Jesus answered:
In the Holy Scripture it says: "Do not tempt the Lord your God."
Then the devil transferred Him to a high mountain and showed Him therefrom all the kingdoms of the world in all their splendor,You see? This all is mine! Bow to me and I will give you these kingdoms!
But Jesus answered:
"Go away, Satan!" In the Holy Scripture it is said: no one can be worshiped except God. So Satan left with nothing.
Notice that Jesus defeated Satan every time by quoting scripture. In this Jesus was teaching us that the word of God is our sword and shield in spiritual warfare. Arm yourself with a deep knowledge of the Bible and you will have tremendous power to overcome obstacles in life, to defeat demonic enemies that come against you, and to wage war victoriously against the giants of sin and lust which cause even the strongest humans to fall under temptation. The word of God is powerful.
You will also find if you do some research that every scripture Jesus cites in this episode comes from the book of Deuteronomy. It is most impressive when you study it in the original, unaltered English Bible, the 1611 King James Version.
