Bible mysteries: For understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise
Why teach wisdom, King Solomon asks at the beginning of his book, it is then that he exposes the reasons for his book:
"For gaining wisdom and instruction;
for understanding words of insight;
for receiving instruction in prudent behavior,
doing what is right and just and fair;
for giving prudence to those who are simple,
knowledge and discretion to the young -
let the wise listen and add to their learning,
and let the discerning get guidance -
for understanding proverbs and parables,
the sayings and riddles of the wise.", Proverbs 1:1-6
What the author of the book is saying is that there is no greater science or wisdom than a blessed life, that is, as Aristoteles explains, the blessed life is the good, beautiful, sensible and happy life.
The blessed life is presented to us as an enigma, as a path to be discovered, decisions are not always clear and uncertainty lurks. That is why in the face of this we need science to guide us, and that science is wisdom.
And this wisdom is presented to us as advices and parables that conclude in riddles or mysterious conclusions and sayings, wisdom seeks to instruct in understanding, that is, progressive thinking and the gift of discernment.
It is important to understand that the book of proverbs is not a book of prophecies, prophecy has another objective, to warn us about the mysteries of bible and providence, a book of prophecies par excellence is the book of Revelations or the book of Daniel. Prophecy complements and perfects wisdom, understanding, and discernment.
After explaining the reasons for his book, King Solomon explains that knowledge needs a spiritual gift to bear fruit, the Fear of God or Fear of the Lord, that is constancy, firmness, devotion, equanimity, stability: "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of the knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction", Proverbs 1:7.
Where is the wisdom? the wise man wonders, wisdom is unattainable but it is constantly around us, it orders everything, it directs everything, it corrects everything.
