Bei dieser Challenge ist jeder eingeladen, der gerade am Grübeln ist über was man schreiben könnte. Unter dem Tag #bestalbumcover soll eine informative Sammlung von Album Covern entstehen, die damals noch mit viel Aufwand für das Vinyl gemacht wurden. We're Only in It for the Money von The Mothers of Invention (1968)

Das dritte Studioalbum We're Only in It for the Money von The Mothers of Invention ist, wie man nicht übersehen kann, eine Parodie auf das Album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band von den Beatles.

Frank Zappa, der damals schon das Band-Zepter in der Hand hielt, arbeitete mit seinen Mothers of Invention gerade an einem Projekt mit dem Namen No Commercial Potential. Nach der Beatles Veröffentlichung von Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band beschloss er das Material auf vier eigenständige Longplayer zu verteilen und es entstanden daraus die We're Only in It for the Money, Lumpy Gravy, Cruising with Ruben & the Jets und Uncle Meat Alben. Zappa meinte später zu diesen vier Alben, das es völlig egal sei wie man die Songs zusammensetzt, es würde immer wieder einen Sinn ergeben.

We're Only in It for the Money war die Reaktion auf das Beatles Album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, weil Zappa der Meinung war, die Beatles machen das alles nur wegen dem Geld. Außerdem war das experimentelle Konzeptalbum, das ein Mix aus Doo-Wop, Psychdelic, moderner klassischer Musik, Avantgarde und Klangcollagen ist, eine Kritik an die amerikanische 68er Generation und die Hippie-Bewegung.

Befindet sich im Innenteil des Covers

Das Album Cover kostete ein kleines Vermögen, was heute über 25.000 € entsprechen würde. Den Entwurf lieferte Filmregisseur Jerry Schatzberg und Zappas häufiger Art Director Cal Schenkel baute die Gipsfiguren, fotografierte und stellte die Collage zusammen. Das Cover unterlag vielen Änderungen, weil Personen nicht abgebildet werden wollten. Die Veröffentlichung wurde wegen Einwände der Plattenfirma um fünf Monate verschoben, außerdem wurden die Augen mit Balken versehen, das eigentliche Parodie-Cover auf die Innenseite des Klappcovers verbannt und das doppelseitige Innenbild auf die Außenseite. Zappa und Cal Schenkel waren über diese Entscheidung verärgert, weil das Sgt. Pepper-Parodie Artwork das bessere Bild war. Zudem gab es aus Zensurgründen textliche Änderungen bei den Songs.

Das Album steht heute in der Liste Best Psychedelic Albums of All Time vom Q-Magazin, befindet sich unter den 500 größten Alben aller Zeiten des Rolling Stone Magazins und wurde im Jahr 2005 von der Library of Congress in das National Recording Registry von ausgewählten Aufnahmen die kulturell, historisch oder ästhetisch wichtig und/oder informieren oder reflektieren über das Leben in den Vereinigten Staaten aufgenommen.

Der Song Flower Punk ist in der ersten Hälfte eine Parodie auf Hey Joe von Jimi Hendrix, der sogar persönlich an dem Fotoshooting teilgenommen hatte. Der gesamte Text ist eine Satire auf die psychedelische Kultur der 60er Jahre.

Hendrix: „Hey Joe, where’re you goin’ with that gun in your hand?“

Mothers: „Hey Punk, where are you going with that flower in your hand? – Well I’m goin’ up to Frisco to join a psychedelic band“
