Bible thought: Don't believe all people who say that they have the Spirit. Instead, test them.

The apostle John in his first letter speaks of a spirit of truth and a spirit of falsehood (error). The word "spirit" in this case means "mentality", "thought", "heart", "inclination of the mind": "We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.", 1 John 4:6.
This is why mentalities or inclinations of the will must be spiritually discerned: "Dear friends, don't believe all people who say that they have the Spirit. Instead, test them. See whether the spirit they have is from God, because there are many false prophets in the world.", 1 John 4:1

The bible teaches us that the spirit manifests itself in prophecy: "Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy.", 1 Corinthians 14:1. The prophecy is intended to correct, teach, order, warn. It is the characteristic spiritual gift of adult life, and adults should control (discern) adults: "The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets" 1 Corinthians 14:32.
Testing the spirits in the bible means finding the truth where it is hidden (there is an intermediate state between good and evil), and above all knowing how to judge the intentions of the heart, greed and fear are never hand in hand with truth. Those who live according to the flesh seek the earthly, that is, the imperfect (the apparent goods), whereas those who live according to the spirit seek the divine, the perfect. The bible warns us about false prophets, who live according to their passions: "They are shepherds with no discernment; they all turn to their own way, each one seeking his own gain.", Isaiah 56:11.
