Reward for Lost Swarm
One of my hives produced a nice swarm on Wednesday. Unfortunately, I was out of town and couldn't catch it in one of my swarm traps.
It is always called "catching" swarms, but it doesn't really involve imprisoning bees against their will like it sounds. You "catch" a swarm just like you catch a nesting bird in a bird house. The swarm trap is just a safe, dry place for the bees to live and you invite the homeless bees to move in.
If I had been home I would have filled a box with empty frames to build new comb in and put it directly under the cluster. I would even make it smell nice with some propolis and lemongrass. A little shake of the tree would cause the cluster to fall off right into the box.
If the bees find their new home satisfactory they start building comb and raising brood. If they prefer another site they will pick up and leave.
This particular swarm got away, but the swarm season is just beginning. I'm sure there will be more.
