The new player in the Bulgarian beer market - Zagorka IPA

in #beersaturday5 years ago (edited)

Well, something excited happened in Bulgaria. What is it? Well... a non-craft brewery launched their first IPA beer. So, here's it:

To be honest, I was very happy to see the Ads of this beer, and I was even more excited when I spotted it in a local shop. Of course I wasn't expecting an IPA as the way all beer lovers and geeks know the style nowadays. With a great amount of hops, the commercial breweries will never be able to reach a price as low as $0,7 per a 330 ml bottle!

The labeling is nothing special, but luckily, the beer company started using brown bottles, instead of their traditional green ones. We all know how much hops hate the combination of green bottles and sun rays. So far, so good... lets open this beer and give it a try.

Visually the beer is dark golden colored with a decent amount of haziness, probably due to the greater amount of hops added. I think in their attempt to leave all the hops particles in the solution they did not filter the beer, after the dry hopping (if there is any dry hopping at all). Surely, this is not the traditional crystal clear commercial beer.
In the nose, the hops are well developed, not as much as we like them, but thecompany states, that they used a traditional English recipe for this style. The IPA back in the years was not so greatly hopped, as it tends to be nowadays. The hops used in this beer are Cascade and Citra, as the labeling states.

In mouth, the beer tends to be a bit slim with not very well pronounced body. It's a bit light, but there are definitely more hops than the traditional lager beers, all the commercial breweries makes. Carbonation is on the mid-range and the head tends to be a bit more lasting than the one in lager beers.

Generally, the beer is quite good, having in mind it only costs $0,7. I will very well enjoy this beer during the hot summer days, and admire Zagorka company for making an IPA beer. Beer snobs in Bulgaria are disliking this beer, but I really think it hase a great place on the Bulgarian beer market. Even with more traditional recipe, this beer is tasty, light and juicy.

Great !BEER post, I don't know of any commercial breweries here in South Africa that has an IPA, thus well done to them, and it seems quite nice as well!!

I think Zagorka company is owned by Heineken, so they may have been encouraged do try selling an IPA. I know some other brands like Amstel have already tried to sell similar products.

Of course, well done to Zagorka. I am very happy with this beer around.

Hey @mdosev, here is your BEER token. Enjoy it!

Hmmmm, looks like a reasonable beer, and for 0,7 of a Euro how could you go wrong? Even the cheapest commercial beers would be 3-4 times that price in Australia.
