Choco hazelnut waffle vanilla double session imperial stout... And it is from Bulgaria.
And if this title doesn’t confuse you, I don’t really know what would. This beer is a collaboration between Rhombust craft brewery and Beer Bastards - two Bulgarian breweries, and for short I can call it A waffle and hazelnut stout. Sounds a bit easier.
The original name of the beer is “tok and zhitsa”, which is an idiotic expression in Bulgarian and means that everything is alright, and literally translated means “electricity(tok) and wiring(zhitsa).
I had a chance to taste this one the last Saturday on tap, when I visited the Rhombus brewery. Although it was a bit different, it was still the same beer.
The aromas and flavors in the tapped beer were not so well pronounced like these in the bottled beer, and I liked a lot more the bottled one. You could easily catch the hazelnuts from the first sip, and some waffly aftertaste. Vanilla was very well balanced and not overwhelming, and this gave a very nice final touch to the overall taste. Of course, the roasted grains gave the traditional stout flavor to the beer.
One thing I didn’t like in the bottled beer was, that there was almost no carbonation. And it’s not due to cap leak or something... I’ve heard some friends gave the same feedback with the brewery’s bottled beers. I don’t know if they are precautious towards gushing or some overcarb issues, but definitely a thing, that is not ok with their beers. Although the beer is great on the flavors side, the carbonation takes away some points and disturbs the overall experience with the beer.
Anyway, a beer, that is worth trying.
Cheers and happy #beersaturday.
