@mazzle Reviews Beer - And Tells You How To Make It! Kirin Megumi (Japan)
Hello Steemians! @mazzle here with my next beer review for #beersaturday!
I recently went out to dinner with my business mentor. We chose a local Japanese restaurant so I decided to take the chance to try a Japanese beer or two.
The first beer that I had was Kirin Megumi. I don't drink a lot of international beers so this is a new one for me and I had no idea what to expect.
The Basics:
Volume: 330ml
ABV: 4.5%
Origin: Yoyohama, Japan (however now owned by Tooheys and possibly made in Australia of all places...)
Style: Pale Lager
What do the makers say about this beer?
“Kirin Ichiban First Press Beer combines the strong cultural heritage of the Kirin brand with the pure, smooth taste of a locally-brewed premium beer,” “We expect the beer to be embraced by drinkers as the premium beer market in Australia continues to grow.”

What did I think of this beer?
The beer pours clear, crisp and with an extremely pale hue. The head is very minimal and lasts a matter of seconds. The carbonation is on the strong side.
Check out that carbonation.... and the head... the head lasted a matter of seconds!
To be blunt, this beer is awful. It has very little aroma, minimal flavour, and is incredibly watery. Maybe I didn't enjoy this beer because I prefer a beer with a little more punch. But in reality I think I dislike this beer so much because I prefer beer with substance and complexity, which this beer lacks in every possible way.
If you want to drink beer but feel like you are drinking heavily carbonated water then this is the beer for you. If you actually want to feel like you are drinking beer then avoid this beer at all costs.
So overall, this was a sad introduction to a Japanese beer, however because this beer is owned by Tooheys, who are in turn owned by Lion Nathan, I doubt this beer is a true representation of a Japanese beer anyway.
What irks me even more is that this beer is being targeted towards the premium end of the market. This is anything but a premium beer. It is swill, and tediously bad swill at that.
I'll continue investigating Japanese beer to see if I can find a decent one.
I rate this beer 0.5 out of 5 steins.
So how do we make this beer?
In short, we don't. Don't waste your time on this beer, just as I won't waste time researching how to make this beer.

Hi @mazzle, that is a nice review. Great and thanks for attending the Steemit #BeerSaturday Challenge
Actually I think you'll find Tooheys is owned by Lion Beverages which is owned by Kirin, so it's certainly Japanese enough - Japanese macro lagers are very very bland (even by Australian standards). There are a number of good Japanese craft breweries though, Baird and Hitachino Nest are both pretty easy to find.
Fantastic, thanks for the info. I must admit, I was so disappointed by this beer that I didn't spend nearly as much time researching the origins of the beer as I normally would.
I'll take a look at the craft breweries you've mentioned very soon. :)
