@mazzle Reviews Beer! - The Brutal Battle of Two Golden Ales

It's a Golden Ale Shoot Off

This evening saw two golden ales battle it out to forever determine which golden ale would be the preferred ale of Grand Beer Master @mazzle for his latest #BeerSaturday review!

Both were worthy opponents (well at least we'll pretend they were for the sake of this review) however there could only be one victor in this War of the Ales.

So, which ales drew arms and took to the fight?

John Boston - The Guard House Golden Ale and Two Birds Brewing - Golden!

John Boston flung themselves into the fray first.

The Weight In

Volume: 330ml bottle
Origin: Sydney, NSW
ABV: 4.2%
Type: Golden Ale

John Boston describes their fighter as:

John Boston The Guardhouse Golden Ale is an aromatic beer with mouth-watering notes of stone fruit and Australian pale toffee malt characteristics. This results in full-bodied flavour, an intense golden hue and a velvety smooth finish.

Did the mighty John Boston land many punches?
The brewers description makes this beer sound like a nectar from the gods. It certainly pours a lovely golden hue. The aroma was of mild to strong bitter hops with a very mild citrus tone. There is no toffee and little malt to speak of. The beer is reasonably carbonated but quite watery at first impression. It is surprisingly bitter given that the rear label rates it is low in bitterness with strong flavours of hops. It's certainly a full-bodied beer, but really lacks anything remotely resembling a velvety smooth finish. The label also says the beer is biscuity, what biscuits?

Overall, this beer really didn't land any solid punches. Maybe a couple of light slaps, but nothing close to a solid right hook.

Biscuity??

So into the fray comes Two Birds Golden!

The Weigh In

Volume: 330ml bottle
Origin: Spotswood, Victoria
ABV: 4.4%
Type: Golden Ale

Two Birds describe their fighter as:

Did the mighty Two Birds land many punches?
This golden ale pours a darker gold than the previous beer and has a much better and longer lasting head. The aroma has definite notes of citrus and malts which translate well onto the palate. In addition to the citrus notes on the palate, the bitterness is low with a nice mild strength of hops. The beer is well carbonated and has a lovely fresh finish. There is definitely something to be said for having some accuracy in your tasting notes, so Two Birds have done well in comparison to John Boston in this regard. Biscuits... really??

Overall, Two Birds landed many a powerful punch in this Battle of the Brew. They finished their pitiful opponent with a solid right hook and left that abysmal excuse for a beer flat on the mat.

Well done Two Birds, well done indeed.

Sort:

haha. I will vote for 2 birds too.

John Boston should only be used as toilet water to be honest.

Well that's a win for the little guy (or in fact gals at two birds) over John Boston's conglomerate owners of Woolworths. Two Birds are a great brewery.

It was pretty obvious who was going to win. The funny thing is that I was given these beers along with some others in a “craft beer” pack.

Argh, Christmas a time of year well meaning friends/collegues give you some 'craft beer' becuase, well you like beer - at least they try.

Exactly! It was fun comparing the two beers though. :)

I like two birds specially if you can get two for one, no pun

I’d never actually had their beer before. I was really impressed.

What did you expect 2 birds against only 1 John, obvious!! 2 against 1 will win!! LOL
Very nice post.
