It's a Christmas Holiday Beer Review!

I'm very excited about this review for this week's #BeerSaturday. This is the first time that I have visited a brewery in my home town of Adelaide. I had never heard of Little Bang Brewing Company before this visit to Adelaide.

My wife and I had some spare time so we visited Dr Google to see what local Breweries were in our vicinity, and conveniently found that Little Bang was a 5 minute drive from the Mother-in-Law's home.

This is quite a unique brewery. I called one of the owners before heading there to ask if I could bring my dogs along since we didn't have anyone around to look after them. They were more than accomodating and welcomed our large fur beasts with open arms. The other thing that I love about this brewery is the background of the owners:

We're the Little Bang Brewing Company, straight from the suburbs of Adelaide. We are Fil and Ryan, and our families. We used to make video games for a living, we were nerds for games. We still are, really, but now we make beer.

I was able to try three beers here, and each of them were very different from one another. The beers I tried were The Naked Objector - West Coast IPA, Chateau du Meau Faux - Belgian Strong Ale, and the Fifty Darlymples - Double IPA.

Needless to say, I staggered out rather than strolled out of this Brewery. Thankfully I made detailed notes while sipping on my selection of brews. So read on!

All beer data and ratings out of 5 are in the table at the end of this review.

The Naked Objector

I'm only a recent inductee to a good IPA. I used to find the bitterness of the hops used in IPA to be a little off putting. Since developing my palate a little further however, I've come to really enjoy a good quality IPA. Thankfully, this is one of those.

The beer is deep amber in colour and has a full and long lasting head. The aroma gives strong notes of hops and bitterness which translates well to the palate. The carbonation moderate to strong which suits the style of beer well. And the strength of the bitterness on the palate is well balanced with the full bodied nature of this beer.

This is an excellent IPA, and extremely refreshing in the warm Summer sun.

Chateau du Meau Faux

If you've been reading my beer reviews for a while, you'll know that I am a big fan of a Belgian Strong Ale. This one is a fantastic example of a Strong Ale, and really packs a punch at 9.9% ABV.

The beer pours a lovely clear dark amber and strangely didn't really pour with much of a head. There are strong malts on the nose with a mild sweetness. The beer is well carbonated and has very low bitterness, which is standard for this type of beer. On the palate you can really taste the malts and toffee characteristics.

It's concerning that you can't tell just how potent this beer is while drinking it. The brewers have very effectively disguised the potency of this brew. It isn't until afterwards that you realise just how tipsy you are... it's a good thing I had my wife with me to drive.

This is a great example of a Strong Ale. The only downside would be the lack of head on the beer and the fact that you really couldn't sit and sip on a couple of these beers. One was plenty for me.

Fifty Darlymples

This was my first experience of a Double IPA. I was certainly expecting bitterness but... wow... I was blown away after my first sip of this beer. Thankfully the bitterness subsides as you progress with the beer. That was one hell of a shock to start with though.

The beer pours a deep misty amber with strong hops on the nose and a bitterness that you can actually smell. As with The Naked Objector, the head is long lasting and the carbonation is quite decent. On the palate, the bitterness is powerful. It is strangely enjoyable however, by this stage, I was slightly tipsy so could have been overly positive in my reviewing.

It is clear that this is a well constructed Double IPA, and is an enjoyable beer. I wouldn't go back for a second one however given this isn't my normal type of beer. The Naked Objector, however, I could drink all day.

Concluding Remarks

In summary, The Little Bang Brewing Company is an excellent small craft brewer. The team have done an excellent job developing a small range of great quality beers. It seems that they specialise in IPAs, which isn't a bad thing at all.

I look forward to watching this local craft brewer get bigger and better as time goes on. After visiting, it's very clear that they have a strong following within the local community which can only get better with time.

This has everything a good brewery visit should have, accomedating owners/brewers, dogs, a beer garden, a weird back story for the brewers and most importantly amazing beers. I know I've had the 50 dalrylmpes when I was last in Adelaide (drinking at NOLA) I do remember it being very impressive indeed.

I’ll probably be back for another round before I head back to Melbourne. :)

Those beers are certainly high in alcohol, it is no wonder you were a bit unstable after testing all these beers, nice post.

They really were. Thanks@rynow.

I'm glad that microbrews have gained a good bit of popularity in the states. Still, we are far behind Europe and Oz when it comes to flavor. Great post here, I enjoyed your beverage odyssey.
