Tipples Beer Review #92 - Verhaeghe Echt Kriekenbier (Bel)
I love Belgian beers, and too often in the race for novelty in the craft beer world we forget about the classic styles. This is one of those classic style - Kriek Bier
A lambic style beer, which means it's sour and dry with if brewed with fermented Morello Cherries and uses wild yeast, a classic style.
Verhaeghe Brewery is old, but not by Belgian standards it started in 1875 and in in West Flanders in Belgium.
The beer itself is amazing, it is a Deep Ruby red colour. It smells so good , not of cherries particularly, but a sour sweetness, with is hard to explains, like a great flanders red ale.
The taste is fantastic, sweet cherry fruit that moves to sourness in a spilt second, but then after the sip sits in you cheeks as sweetness, it is so sophisticated and so so good. Best beer I've had for a while.
I had to have this classic belgian with a classic Australian lamington, which for those non Aussies is a sponge cake with jam then covered in chocolate and coconut.
Chocolate, coconut and Cherries, geez it works well - almost like a Cherry Ripe.
