Tipples Beer Review #90 - Modus Operandi Southern Hemisphere IPA (Aust) & Brouwerij Emelisse TIPA (Hol)

This might be a mistake after Hard Fork 20 - can anyone vote, or is everyone freaked out at being at 50% of less voting power - well as this post will tell you, even if things don't look too good early stick in there and everything will be okay in the end

Modus operandi Southern Hemisphere Black IPA

Black as black can be, big foamy head, it promises to showcase hops from the southern hemisphere, at 6.9% it should be malty enough to be balanced with a good mouthfeel.

So what's it like? It smells fantastic, sweet stonefruits. The mouth feel is all wrong though, it feels thin and unbalanced, which is really unusual because you shouldn't be able to make an almost 7% beer feel thin. Is it too much hops, is it something in the grain bill, I don't know enough about beer to know really. Weirdly Modus Operandi make amazing beers, I don't think I've ever had anything of theirs I haven't liked so I'm just so darn shocked.

Brouwerij Emilisse TIPA

I wasn't planning to have a second beer, but I felt unsatisfied so I went again. This time it's my favourite Dutch brewery Brouwerij Emelisse. They normally do big boozy, malt bombs which are barrel aged, but this is something different. It's their TIPA, one assumes a triple IPA. It weighs in at 10% so that feels tripled. The colour is an amber red. The smell more malt than hops, it's more rotten stonefruits than sweet stonefruits. This is the exact opposite of the Modus Operandi, it is beautifully balanced, which is what you need to a huge hop, huge malt monster. This is a really a very very nice brew.
