Tipples Beer Review #121 – Watching Footy and Drinking Beer.

in #beersaturday5 years ago

It’s Saturday night and I’m watching footy and drinking beer, of course it’s probably not the football you are thinking of (and in fact does any other country abbreviate football to Footy or is that just an Australian thing) and the beer is probably not you’d expect wither.
So let chat about both.

The first beer is Strafe Hendrik, which is a classic Belgian Quadruple. Meaning it’s should be big, boozy and Belgiany.

It does pour with a big tan head, with fat bubbles that really doesn't settle. Making for a slow pour. There is a hint of banana in the nose, which will come from the classic Belgain yeast. The beer itself is dark brown ,almost black in colour. Sweet with a great silky mouthfeel. There is No alcohol burn or even a hint of it which is impressive for 11 percent beer.
All in all a pretty solid start to the evening.

Now the football – I'm talking about Australian Rules football, and game really only played by Australians, My team is the North Melbourne Kangaroos, they were playing the Brisbane Lions. We were last a powerhouse in the late 90s and Brisbane in early 2000s but they are surprisingly good this year, currently second in the comp and we have had a tough year, we started really badly, were last in the competition after the first 8 or so games, but then we sacked our coach, and since then turned it all around, we had be flying but have come back down to earth again.

The best way to explain Australian rules is through video – so here is one from a couple of years ago,

The second beer was Prairie Ales artisan ale hulk hands dry hopped Gose. This Looks like a pretty standard beer, yellowy, little head, not too many bubbles. But it's anything but, it's a smooth mouthfeel, a nice gose tang, and a hint of hops, super refreshing, very drinkable.

The game way a nail biter, Brisbane won, just, after a few dubious umpiring decisions in the last few minutes, oh well there is always next Saturday.

And speaking of Saturday, this entry is part of @detlev ‘s amazing Beer Saturday competition, read all about it here:

Oh i like a straffe Hendrik now and then. Very dangerous beer like all quadruple beer. But sounds like a good evening, enjoying some quality beers and watching sports. A beer now in front of me is a karmeliet tripple, another great Belgian beer, next on the list my standard La Chouffe beer. Cheers!

Hey! It has been a while! The beers look great and the sport looks fun (though I can't ever shake a memory from many years ago of watching an Australian football player's leg snap at the shin and whip around like it was made of rubber...).

Honestly, I'm impressed you managed to get Prairie all the way over there. I had no idea they exported that far. Prairie is a great brewery that makes some fantastic brews. If you have a chance to try out some of their sours, I would definitely recommend it (if you like sours that is). They also do some interesting barrel aged stuff and of course their "bomb" series (stouts with various additions, such as vanilla, cacao nibs, chili peppers, etc.) is always good.

At any rate, I enjoyed the post as always. Thanks for sharing!

Therefore at least a !BEER from me.
