Tipples Beer Review #108 - Hop Nation - The Damned Pilsner (Australia)

I don't tend to drink pilsner, as a craft beer snob I'm always chasing unique and weird beer with far out ingredients, A classic style like a pilsner fails to appeal, but that is snobbery. Pilsners are actually way harder to brew than styleless beers with additives out the wazhoo. So it's time I appreciated a classic pilsner.

Hop Nation are a smallish brewery about 6km from where I live, they live in a old warehouse in the old dock area of Footscray in the inner West of Melbourne, Australia. If you are from Melbourne pop in and see them. They have a good core range of beers as well as heaps of blink and you miss them special releases (often of tap only at the brewery) But onto this beer.

This beer looks exactly as it should - Beautiful clear as a bell a great golden straw colour.

The taste is a little different from a traditional pilsner and it's because of the hop character - traditional pilsners will have a noble hop like Saaz, but this is filled with New Zealand new world hops Motueka and Riwaka hops which give it a nice refreshing fruit zing with just a hint of spice. .

Overall a very enjoyable beer, beautifully brewed and perfect for a sunny Friday afternoon.

As always this is part of #beersaturday by @detlev you should absolutely check out the competition it's a great way to win SBS whilst drinking beer and what could be better. Details here:

I’m also a beer snob and tend to not to drink pils or lagers, but there is something so beautiful about their simplicity.
