Tipples beer review #102 – 8 Wired Istout Affogato (NZ)

in #beersaturday5 years ago

I love a good affogato, at the end of a meal in a restaurant I don’t often feel like a dessert, but I do want something smallish, sweet and maybe alcoholic. So it time to order an affogato. If you don’t know what it is it’s a espresso Coffee poured over a scoop of vanilla ice cream usually accompanied by a biscoti and more often than not some liquer – I like frangelico.

So given this love to a Affogato when I saw that 8 wired had made an Affogato verison of their Istout then I was in.

Textbook condensation on the can

8 wired are one of the best New Zealand breweries, their istout is a big boozy imperial stout and is amazing. So I have high hopes.

I stout affogato

This pours Jet black with a big brown solid foamy head, as you can see from the photos this head was huge (which is a product of the glass rather than the beer) but did settle over the 4 or 5 minutes it took to get all the shots.

look at that head, you could eat it with a spoon

The beer has a strong smell of wet coffee which is never a good sign for me. There are two type of coffee smells in beers, dry, which means the beer has been rested on whole coffee beans, which results in a roasted flavor which I tend to prefer and wet which means the coffee is generally brewed, then added, this can be very hit a miss, you can end up with a astringent taste.

This however is much sweeter on the taste than the smell would suggest, it does indeed taste little an affogato, there a more than a hint of coffee in there but it’s sweet and milky. Upon further drinking I decided it tasted a little bit more like a Vietnamese coffee than a Affogato.

Moody black and white is called for

It is stupidly smooth and easy drinking given that its ten percent alcohol, it although there is some booze that sits in the mouth between sips it's in a luxurious nightcap sort of way.

If you see a can of this buy it – it’s amazing
