The Great Australasian Beer Spectapular

Today's beery tale isn't about a single beer, but rather what I consider to be the best annual beer event in Australia. It's the Great Australasian Beer Spectapular or GABS for short.

It's started in a Bar not far from my house, then grew into the Exhibition Buildings in Melbourne Australia, which is a stunning heritage listed building built for the world exhibition sometime in the 1880's or alike. Over the five years since then it's grown to visit Sydney, Auckland in New Zealand and this year for the first time Brisbane.

It's an amazing concept there are 5 four and half hour sessions over the weekend. I stupidly decided to do Friday afternoon and then backed it up into Friday night. There are the usual stalls from breweries, maybe 40-50 or so of them, each serving 5-6 beers, but what makes this unique is the 'container bars' - this these 152 different breweries have made the special beer just for this event. These container beers tend to be brews that are way way out there, beers they would never otherwise make. Some of the favourites from this year - Black Jelly Bean, One made with donuts. It's goes to Eleven a 11% monster made with 11 hops and 11 malts and a Passionfruit Pavlova beer.

Combine all of this with a silent disco, education classes, a roving band, a Magical who really freaked me out, but it my defense I was pretty tipsy so I think he had a real advantage.,

Anyway, if you are in Australia or New Zealand get thee to GABS it's concludes good beer week down here in Melbourne. But enough of the words...Pics or it didn't happen.
