7th #beersaturday competition – The night Stone Ruined me.

I like to drink at The Alehouse Project in Brunswick in Melbourne, it has all the makings of a great local – great beer, good atmosphere, okay food, and a very friendly owner – Alex. Unfortunately I don’t live or work local, so the night always starts with a Tram ride and ends in a Taxi.

Between this modes of transport are many amazing beers, untappd tells me 437 of them, more than I have drunk in any other drinking establishment.

And so we are here again on another Friday Night, It is the third last day of their two week long ‘dark side of beer festival’ which sees half of their 12 taps running dark beers, Russian Imperial Stouts, Peated barrel aged stouts etc. The other half of the taps are normally reserved for more drinkable beers so as to not scare away the actual locals. But not tonight, tonight the other 6 are Stone Beers – all the way from the good old USA. A fresh shipment just in a straight onto the taps to keep the hop driven beers super fresh.

And it’s from this side of the board that the best beer of the night came from – The Stone Ruin Ten Triple IPA with orange Peel and vanilla bean. The name is a mouthful and so is the beer. It’s a 10.8% 110 IBU monster and it was truly amazing.
Now there are a heap of orange infused IPA around at the moment given the explosion of New England IPA’s but this is not one of those made to be easy to drink refreshing afternoon in the sun sippers.

Nope this can be best described a liquid marmalade, and not store bought marmalade but the type of marmalade that your Mum makes, not my Mum because when she makes marmalade she does it with limes, and it’s mind bendingly sour, but this beer isn’t bitter rather it is sweet, malty and orangey, like a hug from a oompah loompa .
So in a night of pretty amazing beers, this was the highlight for me. Alex our barman/owner will often discuss with me my best beers of the night (generally interspersed with pre-promotion of upcoming beers, and a suggestion that I should come back to try them) which did lead to him giving me a free pot of this to end off the evening. Now that’s the type of service you what in a local bar.
