Odd Side Ales
Now that the polar vortex has passed it was time to get outdoors for some good old winter hiking and brewery visits. We decided to hike around Grand Haven to check out Lake Michigan. After our hike we ended up at one of my favorite breweries, Odd Side Ales. It’s been a little while since my last visit so I opted for a flight.
My flight is five beers Molasses Rum Hipster Brunch Stout, Fussy IPA, Tarte Rouge, Groundskeeper Willie and a Bean Flicker Dark Roast Columbian.
The darker beer is the Molasses Rum Hipster Brunch Stout. This beer is A stout brewed with maple syrup, aged in rum barrels with coffee, bacon, and molasses added. Yes, bacon! However, I did not pick much of that flavor up. It’s a thick and flavorful beer that keeps you tastebuds wondering what the hell is all this deliciousness.
The Tarte Rouge is a delicious mixed fermentation red ale. They aged this beer in oak for 6-12 months which imparts a deep and complex flavor. They then re-ferment this beer with Michigan red grape must and the. They age it an additional 6 months. This process creates intense aromas of berries and raisins.
Fussy IPA was clean and refreshing with loads of grapefruit and citrus. The finish had a touch of pine resin and hoppy bitterness.
Groundskeeper Willie Has the best name. It’s a great reference to beloved Simpson’s character. All I can say is this is one smooth malt bomb.
My last was the Bean Flicker Dark Roast Columbian. I’m a regular to the original Bean Flicker, but this was a pub exclusive because they brewed it with dark roast columbian coffee. This beer is light and smooth with loads of coffee flavor.
Overall, it was a great flight not a bad beer in the bunch. I was just sad we had to leave. I know if I lived closer I would be a regular.
