Beer Review - Bourbon Barrel Aged Stout - THIS ONE IS AWESOME!
All I can say is WOW. This is by far the best bourbon barrel aged stout I have ever had (at least so far). It is amazing. I don't want to spoil the review with more words of praise so here goes the review.
O'Dell Brewing - Bull Proof
Stats
- Brewer: O'Dell Brewing Company - Fort Collins, Colorado In Conjunction with Old Elk Distillery Fort Colllins, Co.
- Alcohol Content: 12% by volume (yes you read that correctly, 12%)
- IBUs: 44
- Company Description: A bourbon barrel stout is, by design, an exercise in collaboration. The profiles of two distinct and celebrated libations come together to form something unique. When Old Elk Bourbon Distillery opened its doors less than a mile from our brewery, back of napkin sketches were traded, and after months of patience, this imperial stout is realized. The freshly emptied bourbon casks contribute hints of sweet vanilla, soft oak, and deep molasses that complement the full body of rich roasted malts. We recommend pairing this beer with a good neighbor.
Presentation
This gem comes in a 12 oz bottle with a wrap around tan label and a black foil wrap around the cap. The bottle is brown but not super dark. the label has some browns of various hues and a description of the beer with shout out to the neighboring distillery with which they cooped this beer using their bourbon barrels. It was a bit on the pricey side, around $10 for a 12 oz bottle. This is similar to the Lucene Milk Stout I had before though.
The Beer
- Appearance: Almost black with a nice mocha colored head of foam on the pour a couple of fingers thick which lasted a bit.
- Aroma: A slight bourbon aroma, not overly strong.
- Taste/Mouthfeel: This was a smooth beer, with a rich mouthfeel, not much carbonation, sweet finish. Did I say smooth, this was not overly bourboned, meaning it had the obvious bourbon presence but it wasn't overwhelming like some of the BBA beers can get. It was a perfect mix of smooth, sweet and bourbon.
- Drinkability: This is a sipper like most BBA beers, especially with the 12% abv, so to be honest, one of these a night or a week would be plenty, but it was so smooth and the bourbon was mixed nicely with the beer, it was just an awesome beer. I like BBA beers, but if the bourbon gets too strong, then it is off-putting a bit. This one did not have that problem.
Rating and Final Thoughts
This beer I gave the God rating of 5.0 on Untappd, it has an overall rating on Untappd of 4.11 with 1745 reviews. I can't stop saying how amazing this beer was, the bourbon was there, clearly noticeable but NOT overwhelming as some BBAs can get. It was smooth and sweet with hints of vanilla. As I mentioned in the Drinkability section, having more than one of these in a night will put you down hard, 12% abv isn't to be triffled with but man, easy to drink one of these every couple of nights. The Price might be a factor also though. But all I can say is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! I don't give out many 5.0 ratings.
5.0/5

That's the holy grail of bourbon aged beers when the bourbon is not overpowering!

Okay! I'll look for it. :-)) If this is a gold standard, I've got to try it sometime. Nice review, ya got me thirsty. Then put on some Gary Moore....
oh its good, I don't often give out 5's on Untappd. Just the right mix of bourbon and beer on this one. if you try any BBA beers, make it this one.
I'm going to SLC next week and I'm curious to see what the state-run liquor stores have available, but I'll look for it. Oh, and I did a review of a Pizza Port IPA a few weeks ago. Haven't seen yours here in beersaturday yet... but I did see on your site.
Now my mouth is watering!! This beer looks amazing in the glass!!
Great post!!
