Beerlao and Baguettes - This my entry for the #BeerSaturday challenge - week #2 by @detlev

Beerlao

A few days ago I was in Laos and enjoyed some Beer. It was quite relaxing and there wasn't much to do. I had already been sight seeing. So, I decided to have dinner and sip away the beer.

It could almost be called a national drink. It is the local beer brand, delivered in the characteristic yellow boxes and can be seen everywhere in the counrty, outside of Laos its difficult to buy. Even though it is brewed with rice, many travelers say, "it's one of the best beer's in Asia."

Here is a popular meme of beerlao

The beer is made from locally grown jasmine wine list; The hops and yeasts are imported from Germany. "Beerlao Original" has an alcohol percentage of 5%. This is the original lager beer produced by LBC and is sold in 330 ml and 640 ml vials. It is available throughout Laos, as well as western-oriented restaurants in Cambodia, but today it is also quite easy to obtain in taverns in Thailand. Here is another beer I drank the next day.

Beerlao has won twice the Gold Quality Award (in 2006 and 2010) and once the Silver Quality Award (2003), awarded by the Monde Section, the first International Quality Institute, founded in Belgium.

Design of Bottle

The design is rather simple, the bottle shape is similar to other brands. The production date is printed on the bottle. On the crown, a tiger is printed.

Taste and Smell - Lager Beer

-The foam is nice and very fine. Well done. Smell dominated by hops.

  • The taste is sweetish-tart, slightly malty, thus quite versatile.
  • the next sips are much sweeter, but not as sharp.
  • Beer tastes not really outstanding, but goes down well.
  • It's a decent beer, which also corresponds to European standards.

Lao baguettes, a legacy from the French colonial era, are also widespread in Laos. At many stalls and in bakeries you get them in the morning and all day long. It's great for soaking up all that beer. It's alittle heavy so don't eat too much of it. They best eaten while the baguettes are still warm from the oven. Tip: Keep a few packets of butter and some olive oil in your backpack. With or without butter these loaves are fantastic.
