Craft Beer Tasting - "Happy New Beer - 5% White IPA"
Several small craft beer makers are slowly unraveling the monopoly of the Thai beer market. Today I tried a White IPA for the first time.
Due to expensive and restrictive barriers to entry, the beer giants of Singha and Chang have long controlled the beer market in Thailand, and let's just say that neither of them make a beverage worth mentioning. It is for this reason that we are seeing more and more young entrepreneurial young Thais with a taste for decent beer, having a go at making their own.
MY CHOICES TONIGHT
MY SELECTION
HAPPY NEW BEER WHITE IPA
This beer was served in a rather unique glass, that had a screw top lid on it. I get the feeling that it may have sat in the glass for a short while as it tasted a little flat. When I took the lid off, however this beer had a gorgeous aroma, that was quite fruity. A white IPA at its most basic level is a beer that mixes the hoppy characteristics and brewing techniques from the Indian Pale Ale with a wheat base and the spicy additions of refreshing Belgian wit beer.
The beer is lighter in body and colour and alcohol content, in this case only 5%. It should be refreshing and easy to drink with a slightly tart flavour, and this beer was all of these. I must admit, I'm still coming to terms with the IPA flavour and trying to decide if I like it or not. I think I'll need to try a few more pints to be sure ;)...
