beer review: Rebel Local

Back in 2011, A nr of students in Belgium upon graduating decided to start brewing beer.

They named their brewery: 'Brouwers verzet" ("Brewers resistance") because they wished to offset them from the popular large commercial producers, and return to the roots of brewing good smaller batch beers.

5 years later, they acquired their own brewery, having previously rented other brewer's capacity. This was accompanied by a change of name: they now called themselves: "Brouwerij 't Verzet" (Brewery The resistance").

They have a nr of beers, some are permanently available, others come and go, others are one off brews, but they have a recognizeable style, partly due to the great and unique label designs, each telling a story about the beer itself.

Their first beer, and probably still the main core of their range, is the "Rebel local" (local Rebel in English, almost pointless translation).

This is a strong blond, beer, think in the style of Duvel, but somewhat more towards the tripel style, with a healthy dose of hops importing a floral aroma and a bitter aftertaste.

At 8% ABV, this is a great, and delicious beer. Suficiently aromatic to drink whilst slowly savouring it, whilst also easily drinkable during a night with friends, pairable with food or great by itself.

Besides this beer, they have somewhat of a specialisation in the "oud bruin" style, making a classic oud bruin, but also a range of oud bruin infusions, with regular additions like cherry, but also more rebellious choices like oak leaves.

Most of their production is consumed within Belgium, but about 15% is said to be exported, so in your local specialty beer shop, you will probably be able to find one or more beers of this modern brewery
