Beer review: Cornet

in #beer3 years ago

Tonight I'm having a Cornet,

A beer belonging to the Palm breweries group, which in it's turn is owned by the Dutch Bavaria group.

The beer in itself is in the style of "Strong Blond" (think Duvel, Omer,...) but with one important difference: it's oaked.

I have no idea how the oaking process works for this beer, but surely, the beer will not have been stored in oak barrels for a few months, since that would cost too much. To be honest, they do not market it in that way either, and the beer has a clear taste of oak wood.

My idea (but it's a guess) is that at some point during the process oak shavings are introduced to the process. My idea would be to run the hot wort (the endproduct of the brewing process, before yeast is added), over oak shavings, this would also limit the risk of infection.

I personally enjoy this beer, some people feel that it' not for them, but that's up to them. If you like some oak wood flavour in your beer, this one's for you. Recently they've also released a smoked version of this beer, but I've not yet had the chance to drink that one.
