Beer from the Middle Ages...

in #beer9 years ago (edited)

In our region in Flanders and Brabant(Belgium) they used to make their beer with herbs and gale instead of hops in the Middle ages.

There was always a big competition between the gale and hops dealers untill in the 15th century we became the "reinheitsgebot" from Beieren (Germany). Which said beer could only contain hops, barley and water.

So no more gale beers...

But in 1987 they ended the "reinheitsgebot". Beer with gale could be brewed again but because of the popularity of the hops there are only very few who did it again.

One of them is the "gageleer". A biological beer from Oud-Turnhout in the Belgian Campine.

I serve this beer in my restaurant. It's a blond beer with a unique crispy, peppery, eucalyptus flavour.
Not pasteurized and fermented a second time in the bottle. Alcohol percentage of 7.5%.

Really a nice one to taste when you have the chance guys.

I love belgian beer ! Cheers mate

What a cool old style beer! I love that some of these older recipes and styles are becoming more popular, they are the beginnings of the industry, and should be noted. Feel free to check out other great booze reviews at @steempub. Cheers from @steempub-trail!
