[BEER REVIEW] In Denmark, Nothing Is Too Controversial 🍺

in #beer7 years ago (edited)

Christian Skovdal Andersen, the man behind the Danish microbrewery Beer Here, isn't afraid of putting controversial and politically incorrect labels on his bottles. His Malus Pater for instance, depicts a Catholic preacher doing indecent things with a little boy. Tia Loca depicts Tintin in Hitler mustache marching through a Bavarian town. And the beer we have in front of us today, the coffee flavored milk stout called Ammestout (nursing stout), depicts a mother who's knocking back a bottle of beer while nursing an infant. The bottle was bought in Denmark, and I'm sure it will never reach the shelves of the government-owned chain of liquor stores in politically correct Sweden. It would simply not be allowed according to our very strict alcohol laws.

Christian Skovdal Andersen is one of Denmark's most recognized brewers. Before creating the phantom brewery Beer Here he managed the celebrated Ølfabrikken and was one of the very first Danish microbrewers. It's Christian himself that draws the often controversial bottle labels.

This milk stout (a stout containing lactose, the sugar derived from milk) is brewed at the Søgaards Bryghus in Aalborg, the university city in the North of Jutland, Denmark. In addition to the lactose, they've also added coffee.

Beer Here Ammestout

Brewery: Beer Here
Style: Milk Stout
ABV: 6.5%
500 ml bottle

Appearance: Dark brown liquid, with a high, light brown and airy foam.

Nose: Roasted and slightly burnt coffee when poured, which then subsides a bit and makes room for a tart note of lactose, milk chocolate, dark berries and licorice. I also notice a vague hint of mint.

Palate: A well-balanced sweetness, which doesn't appear particularly lactic to me, but that complements the roasted coffee aromas very well. There's also plenty of chocolate and some berries with a hint of vanilla.

Finish: A quite dry and roasted aftertaste with a slightly woody bitterness.

Conclusion: A rather straightforward but well-made stout that isn't dangerously sweet, but actually quite hard-roasted with a pretty strong coffee aroma. The body is perhaps a bit thin, but the flavors are great, without offering any greater depths or complexity. A score of 3.6 out of 5 drunken mothers then.

Looks lie a fun beer.. That label is unique!

and typically Danish :)

Mmmm... Milk stouts are my favorite. Very flashy labels! It goes well with carefree occasion of beer, but ,there are limits to good taste, I believe.

Great post and a different beer.

But the labels are - puhhh - different

Thanks for reading, cheers!
