[BEER REVIEW] A World-Class Stout from Evil Twin 🍺

in #beer7 years ago (edited)

Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø is the man behind Evil Twin Brewing, a true beer enthusiast and also identical twin of Mikkel Borg-Bjergsø who owns and operates the more famous Mikkeller brewery. Jeppe's interest in quality beer was sparked already in his teens and he quickly came to the realization that Denmark's supply was way too boring, with generic and soulless factory made beers such as Carlsberg alone in the market. He started a beer club where the fifteen club members met once a month, and tasted different beers they had managed to get hold of. To make the meetings even more interesting, they started brewing their own beer after a while.

Just as Mikkeller, Evil Twin is a so-called phantom brewery, which means that they don't have their own brewery equipment, but instead make guest appearances at other breweries around the world, bringing only their recipes and their enthusiasm and knowledge. The particular stout we'll be having a closer look at today was brewed at Westbrook Brewing in South Carolina, USA.

Evil Twin – Even more Jesus

Brewery: Evil Twin Brewing
Style: Imperial Stout
ABV: 12%
475 ml can

Appearance: Pitch-black with a red shine. Pours extremely thick.

Nose: Extremely complex; The hops, the malt, the sweetness and the alcohol form an inseparable unity, like an enamored couple. The rather dry mouth-feel and the relatively high bitterness is beautifully balanced by notes of both sweet and salt licorice. There are also notes of dark rye bread, charcuteries, quality tobacco, leather, and a hint of fortified wine. One of the better noses of 2017 for me.

Palate: The palate is really delivering what it promised. Quite boozy at first, but it's interrupted by a hefty amount of hops: bam! Then creamy and rich dark chocolate mousse together with fortified wine and espresso. I'm amazed by the viscosity; it looks like a glass of engine oil almost. The licorice comes forth as the temperature increases.

Finish: The aftertaste holds both an edgy bitterness and notes of roasted malt, together with butterscotch, whisky, orange peel and plum.

Conclusion: A really rich and thick stout with loads of character. Sip slowly! As you can imagine, the final score will be quite high; 4.8 points out of 5 is more than well deserved.
