[BEER REVIEW] A Bilingual Gooseberry Flavored IPA 🍺

in #beer8 years ago (edited)

The beer we'll be trying today is a sour IPA flavored with Gooseberry and a cooperation between Norwegian brewery Lervig and British Buxton Brewery. The name Trolltunga (troll tongue) derives from a spectacular rock formation at about 1100 meters above sea level. It hangs horizontally out of a mountain at about 700 meters above the lake Ringedalsvatnet in the Hordaland county, Norway. The renowned Lervig brewery is the local pride of Stavanger and began its journey in 2003 as a reaction to the Carlsberg domination on the Norwegian market. Buxton Brewery is located in the little spa town with the same name about 12 miles southeast of Manchester. One of the new generation of UK brewers that are truly modern and innovative.

Buxton / Lervig Trolltunga

Origin: Stavanger, Norway & Buxton, UK
Brewery: Lervig / Buxton Brewery
Style: Sour IPA / Fruit beer
ABV: 6.3%
330 ml bottle

Appearance: Golden-greenish and very opaque.

Nose: Wow, surprisingly sweet and fruity. Lovely notes of ripe gooseberry, but also mango, rhubarb, grapefruit and peach. It all feels delightfully summery.

Palate: Boom! This is probably the most acidic beer I've ever had and it literally bites hold of the inside of my cheek. After the veritable explosion of sourness, there are some nice notes of various exotic fruit. It's much like chewing on a handful of unripe green gooseberries while sucking on a lemon slice. There is some balancing sweetness from the malt and slight bitterness from the hops. Medium bodied with a restrained carbonation.

Finish: Dry, grassy and sour.

Conclusion: A rather extreme but interesting beer that offers twists and surprises. The nose was definitely more pleasant than the palate. If you have acid-reflux problems, I recommend you stay away from this one. with Overall score: 3.8 out of 5 gooseberries.
