Hi all,

a few weeks have passed and I did not take part in the beloved #beersaturday. I know there can be no real excuse for that so I won't try to find one ...

This week I am going to present a beer from outside Germany, just because I really like this beer a lot :) And you can even get it here in Germany as well.

Kilkenny, the red Irish beer

Well just to have one thing clear right from the start, you are not able to buy a Kilkenny in Ireland, just because this beer is specially branded with this name only for the export. Inside of Ireland the same Beer with only a bit less alcohol but with the same characteristic red color is called Smithwick's. I just read somewhere that nowadays they also sell Kilkenny within Ireland, well at least a few years ago this was absolutely not the case.

Facts

Kilkenny is an Irish red ale and as this name is already suggesting it features a brown/red type of color. It has been introduced over 300 years ago in 1710. The export version (the Kilkenny) features 4,2% of alcohol, while the Smithwick's has only 3,8%. Originally it was brewed in the Smithwick's brewery in Kilkenny (yeah it's a bit confusing) but, after it has been bought by Guinness and later by Diageo, this brewery shut down in 2013 and all these beers are now brewed in Dublin.

Emotions

Well actually I got a lot of emotions for that beer, and all of them are good ones. Being it the Kilkenny or the Smithwick's they are very fresh ales that I could drink all evening long. Actually, i did quite a few times. I learned about this beer in Ireland when I was traveling around the country and I directly fell for the fresh taste which has a hint of caramel in it.
Since that vacation, i normally have a few of them in my fridge.
Oh, have you seen the fantastic old glass mug that I got myself out of my uncle's belongings? yeah, i know it features the "Bellheimer Bier" Advertisement, but this is part of why I find this one amazing :)
Well, that's it for this week, was nice to take part again :) and always a good reason to drink a beer!

German Version

Hmm ein paar Wochen sind vorbei und ich hab nicht am #Beersaturday teilgenommen, so ein Ärger! Da es keine ernsthafte Ausrede für so ein Versagen gibt versuche ich es auch nicht und schreibe einfach eine weitere Beer Review :)

Diese Woche zum ersten Mal ein Bier das nicht aus Deutschland kommt, sondern aus Irland und wie wir alle Wissen lassen es die Iren auch gerne mal Krachen. Dieses Bier ist sogar hier in Deutschland erhältlich.

Kilkenny, das rote irische Ale

Naja um eins mal direkt klar zu stellen, in Irland kriegt man kein Bier das Kilkenny heisst. Die in Irland verkaufte Version heisst Smithwick's, ist eigentlich baugleich hat aber ein bisschen weniger Alkohol. Kilkenny ist nur für den Export bestimmt gewesen, wobei ich gerade gelesen habe, dass man seit einer Weile auch innerhalb von Irland Kilkenny kaufen kann. Als ich vor ein paar Jahren dort war gabs das allerdings nirgends :)

Fakten

Emotionen

Für dieses Bier hab ich eine Menge positiver Emotionen. Egal ob Kilkenny oder Smithwick's, beide Ales sind total frisch und spritzig und ehrlich gesagt könnte ich die ganze Nacht eins nach dem andern trinken. Ist auch schon ein paarmal passiert. Kennengelernt habe ich das Bier in Irland, als ich auf einer Rundreise war. Ich war direkt begeistert und hab seitdem immer ein paar Kilkenny im Kühlschrank liegen. Bisher hat sich noch niemand beschwert :)
Ich möchte die Gelegenheit nutzen und noch auf den Glaskrug hinweisen, ein Erbstück von meinem Onkel auf das ich sehr stolz bin :)
