Wallace Brewing Company 6:60 IPA—An Amateurish Beer Review

It's been a while since I posted one of these. Let's take a look at another Idaho microbrew! Washington and Oregon have the craft beer rep, but does their neighbor to the east have more than timber, gold, silver, and potatoes?

Pronounced Six-Sixty, local Idaho-grown pilsner malt sets the tone with a distinct, crisp profile that’s elevated to 6% ABV; to this we introduce Cascade and Chinook hops and a secret New Zealand variety that lends notes of citrus peel, while a heavy addition of orange peel bumps up the juiciness. Despite its 60 IBUs, 6:60 lacks any harsh bitterness/bite from the hops. Imagine an aroma of freshly squeezed citrus oils wafting over a semi-sweet biscuit flavor that has distinct orange undertones.

There's definitely some slightly-sour pilsner there in the flavor profile. The hops are indeed not harshly bitter, but perhaps not bitter enough. The citrus is present, but much more subtle than some I have tried. There isn't much malt sweetness, but I think that's about right for this kind of a brew.

Whether you like IPAs or haven't tried them before, this might be worth a try. The alcohol content and bitterness alike are low enough to not severely throw off those unaccustomed to more aggressive IPAs while still offering an interesting take on the over-saturated microbrew IPA market for those who are more adventurous. However, it will still be a shock to the palate of anyone who only drinks Bud, Miller, or Coors, so if that's your beer of choice, try new brews like this and expand your horizons!
