Deschutes Brewery Hop Slice Summer Ale: An Amateurish Beer Review

in #beer7 years ago

Deschutes Brewery is in Bend, Oregon. They've been around since 1988, so they're not just another new bandwagon brewery out to be trendy and hip. I think that helps them keep a better business and brewing philosophy now that they're approaching their 30th year.

I have commented before on the over-use of hops in northwestern microbrews, and the name on this bottle made me wonder whether this would be another trendy unpleasantly bitter ale. Fortunately, this one is rather well-balanced.

Despite the name, this beer is not over-hopped. The flavor is on the "refreshing with a bit of bite" end of the spectrum rather than "overkill."

If you're looking for a good summer beer, this seasonal offering is recommended. 5% ABV isn't too strong, 35 IBU isn't too bitter, and the hops seem to have been chosen to enhance the flavor rather than be overbearing.
