Tipples Beer Review #86 - Alehouse Project and the Sours part 1

in #beer6 years ago

So last weekend we got back to your favourite 'local' pub, the Alehouse Project in Lygon Street Brunswick. I'll claim this is the best beer bar in Melbourne, almost everyone would agree it's in the top five.

One of the things I like about is that they hold 'festival' about every two weeks, each one generally has beers that you can't get elsewhere. So when they announced 'Shut the Puck Up" tap takeover, which would see 10 or so sour beers I tap I was pretty darn excited.

You don't want to hear about all of them so I'm only going to tell you about 3 of the best....

A little red but not too much

First up is the New Zealand brewery - Garage Project and their, wait for it 'Raspberry Tomato and Basil Sour', which would be weird for a pizza and certainly strange for a beer. It might be really unusual, but more importantly, it's refreshing, with a tomato it reminds me a little of a bloody mary, although it has a nice mouthfeel, it's not that thick. I would certainly have it again, although I can't imagine this is going to have a wide distribution.

Ligonberries and Nachos

Next up To ol one of the better craft brewers in Denmark - Their brew 'One tonne of lingonberries, The Chinese worked out the concept of sweet and sour at the same time and so has this beer, it's sour and tangy at the back of the mouth whilst being sweet on the lips, a very very good brew. After some research, this is exactely what they were going for, they describe the beer as such...: Not too sour and not too sweet but juicy, crisp and very refreshing. It’s tartness belies the 8% ABV – this is a beer to get your saliva glands working whilst just thinking about it. Just be careful you don’t drink too much!

6 Bretts closest to camera

Last up in my top 3 is an Australian brewery - Boatrocker and their beer '6 Brett's' which is a light refreshing brew it would be perfect for summer - more tart rather than sour - again I really like it. It did, of course, prompt a discussion about the 6 best Bretts in the world - after much discussion, we finally agreed on former Sydney captain Brett Kirk, but that was about it, of all the Bretts in the world, only one was okay, how Boatrocker got to six is anyone's guess. .

As always this is a part of the best weekly beer related competition on Steemit - Beer Saturday by @detlev. I don't think I would like the tomato one, and I am not a great fan of sour beers, although the last one looks ok to me!! Nice post.
