Honduran Beer

As we started talking about beer yesterday I will today show you the beers that are brewed in Honduras, these beers are real good, better than the commercial brands available in the US, I mean the ones made there like Budweiser, Miller, Coors etc.

So I will start with the one I used to prefer Salva Vida, this one was first brewed in 1916 here in La Ceiba by a company that was a subsidiary of the company that would in the future become Dole Food Company. It was called Salva Vida, which in Spanish means Life Saver, but the name derives from Salvador Vaccaro and Vicente D'Antoni the owners of the company as you can see the name is Salva (Salvador Vaccaro) and Vida (Vicente D'Antoni). I used to think it was a great beer, I guess it still is.

After this one they came out with Imperial which was brewed in the capital Tegucigalpa in 1930, I never really liked this beer.

Then 1955 was the year they started brewing Nacional beer which was sold in a clear bottle, eventually this beer was discontinued.

In 1983 the brewery which by then had become a monopoly brewing every single beer made in Honduras introduced Port Royal beer with a lot of hype, they brought a German brewmaster and it was and is supposed to be a world class beer personally I never liked it that much, but it does have a lot of demand.

After this in 2006 they came out with a new beer in a clear bottle it was called Bahia but due to some liquor company having already patented that name the brewery changed the name to Barena.

By this time the brewing company had been sold by Dole to South African Breweries, and the whole system changed, now they also brew Miller here, Coca Cola was also bottled by them, but after SAB sold out to a Belgian company they got rid of the Coca Cola bottling, last thing I knew is that the Coca Cola we are now drinking here is bottled in Guatemala, but I am not sure of that.
