The first thing is to enter your judge information. Now, you don't have to be a certified judge in order to participate, but you do have to be paired with one.

You fill in the category, subcategory and entry number. You can view all the different beer styles here.

If there are any special ingredients then you would list them also.

You check the bottle fill. Looking for low fill, high fill and/or any signs of infection before you open the beer.

The total any beer can receive is 50 and they are broken down into sections.

Beginning with aroma.

You want to note the absence or presence of the malts. Is it appropriate for the style? Are the hops coming through the nose? Is the alcohol warming to the nose. It takes work and practice to have the ability to recognize all the nuances of beer.

Next is Appearance.

Is the head dense and long lasting? Is it clear and the right color?

Then on to Flavor.

Are the right ingredients coming through? Can you detect any defects like infection? Off flavors?

Off to mouthfeel..

How does it affect your taste buds? Is is carbonated correctly? Is there a warming sensation from the alcohol?

Then we close it out with your overall impression of the beer. How close did the brewer get to reproducing the style of beer? Is there anything he can do to make the next batch better? Overall how did you like the beer?
