Beer Review: Red Lodge Ales - Czech*Mate Pilsner

in #beer6 years ago

The wife left me home alone so I am catching up on beers I have in the garage fridge. After the heavy duty BBA Imperial IPA, I am dropping it down a notch to a lighter beer, a Pilsner from a Montana brewery. Maybe backwards in the way you are supposed to drink beers (light to dark) but it is the way I roll.

Stats

  • Brewery: Red Lodge Ales Brewing Company - Red Lodge, Montana.
  • Alcohol Content: 5.3%

  • Company Description: Czechmate Pilsner is modeled after the famous Czech beers. It has a straw-gold color. The malt flavor is soft and biscuit-like. The mouthwatering Czech hops linger on the tongue. The pilsner cold ages for eight weeks, making it finish clean and easy. Silver and bronze medal winner – North American Brewers’ Awards 2004 and 2006.

The Bottle
This is one of Red Lodge Ales beers they produce all year round and as with their other beers, it is presented in a 12 oz brown bottle. It has a single label on the main body which wraps around about 60% of the bottle. The label is pretty simple and consistent with Red Lodge Ales other beers, while varying in the graphics, the general layout is the same. Some Red Lodge seasonal beers come in the larger 22 oz bottles. I have had a number these.

The Beer

  • Appearance: A straw colored beer with a moderate head of off white foam. Minor lacing near the top of the glass as I drank the beer.
  • Aroma: Had a sweet aroma, classic pilsner.
  • Taste/Mouthfeel: Light bodied with minor carbonation, had a sweetish finish. A classic pilsner taste, but richer than say a domestic, mass produced pilsner.
  • Drinkability: An easy drinking beer, light and refreshing, good summer beer.

Rating and Final Thoughts

I gave this beer a solid 3.50 on Untappd, where 2 friend rated it 3.63 and overall it is rated 3.48 by 1472 people. It was a good pilsner, made in the classic Czech style, where the best pilsner were born. Tasty, light and easy drinking, a winner in the summer months for sure.

3.50/5

Haven't had any of their beers before, sounds like one I will keep my eyes open for!

Red Lodge Ales make decent beers, their Scottish Ale, Jack's 90, is pretty good, besides that, I really haven't loved any others. I did like the Oktoberfest ,Hunt for Red Oktober, and their Chocolate Imperial Stout. Those two are seasonal and only offered in 22 oz bottles.

Looks rather hazy for a pils. Or is that condensation on the glass? I don't mind hazy beer, but some consider it a serious flaw in a pils.

I think you are correct about the haze. It wasn't crystal clear for sure. Tasted pretty good though. You are an experienced brewery owner, so you have the eye to catch those details. Thanks for pointing that out. I wasn't aware of that. I looked up your brewery, nice webpage.

I know I've seen this on the shelf but don't think I have tried it.
