Beer Review - Dark Sour
Who says I don't try beers that are not my favorites. Another sour beer from a Northwest small brewery. How is it? Lets see shall we.
Sockeye Brewing - Huggy Bear Dark Sout
Stats
- Brewery: Sockeye Brewing, Boise, Idaho
- Alcohol Content: 6.2 by volume
- IBUs: 5
- Company Description: Huggy Bear is a 100% kettle soured beer using Nancy’s Organic Probiotic Yogurt as the source of souring bacteria. The resulting brew is refreshingly tart with notes of cherry and other stone fruits.
Presentation
This beer comes in a 12 oz aluminum can. It is a purple with a fading to silver color in the middle. It has the same Sockeye logo and name with beer name on front and back with the scan bar and government warning on one side. Sockeye beers pretty much have the same look and are easily spotted on the shelves. I believe they only come in 12 oz aluminum cans.
The Beer
- Appearance: It is a surprisely dark beer (well maybe that shouldn't be a surprise since it says dark sour on the can), a very dark reddish browh with a one finger foam head that dissappeared really quickly and left no lacing.
- Aroma: To be honest, it really didn't have much aroma, maybe some light malty smell.
- Taste/Mouthfeel: Highly carbonated and is pretty dry on the finish. Definitely sour and even throw some tartness in there (different than the sour), likely due to the cherries which likely impart the dark color also. The finish I thought was kind of flat and it wasn't a finish I enjoyed.
- Drinkability: I found it to be not very drinkable due to the odd finish, but I did drink the entire can, so there is something for that, right!
Rating and Final Thoughts
I rated this a lowly 2.50 on Untappd, where it has an overall rating of 3.68, in fact I saw one 5 rating. I really did not like this beer all that much, I liked Sockeye's other sour more that this one. The so called "dark fruits" seem to be leaving a weird taste in my mouth. Not a beer I would ever buy again.
2.50/5

Cherry gives a beer some sour/tart-ness on it's own. Then to add sour on top, seems like a double-whammy.
