Beer Advent Calendar - December 11th

in #beer6 years ago

Taking an ever so small step away from yesterday’s helles, today we have a pilsner: the simpler beer style that inspired the creation of helles.

Bierkutscher Edel Pils

I know with yesterday's beer there wasn't much to be said, but there was more to that brew than today’s advent. Helles is supposed to have a little more malt with a little less hops; that idea comes through clearly when comparing the two beers.

Typical to the style, I'm presented with the lightest of straw colors and a medium head. The flavors are weak raw wheat with floral, semi-bitter hops dominating. There really isn't much to find here other than that. Refreshing, but doesn't shine a candle in the light of other pilsners like the December 1st example from Schloßbrauerei Rheder.

Return of the beer coachman

Recognize anything in the beer name? The whole name translates to "beer coachman noble pils." Yep, that means this is one more from Privatbrauerei H. Egerer, and you can see the can bears their crest.

It seems they're largely involved with exporting these beers to America for the advent calendar, giving them the opportunity to slip in several entries of their own. The other breweries most likely only produce bottles and H. Egerer makes the cans for international distribution. That would explain H. Egerer is listed on the back of every can.

Despite the ominous presence of H. Egerer in this advent, I thought I'd fail to uphold the spirit of this series if I didn't leave you with a local German fact. I’ve already covered Pilsting, where Egerer is located, so today I thought I'd share something a little more... obscure.

Last July, a new world record was set in the town of Pilsting. 300 people assembled a hamburger weighing 2,567.5 pounds (that's 1164.6 kilos for Europeans). Yeah... so that happened. The world's biggest burger.

That thing is pressing against the borders of sanity. However, I'm finding a lack of enthusiasm when it comes to a one ton-plus mound of meat compared to the history we've received with the last few beers. Here's looking forward to what tomorrow’s advent might bring. I doubt you'll be able to eat through this burger before our next beer.
