This answers several questions I've had about bees in the winter time. I've always wanted to maintain a hive if/when my living situation allows for it. A family member is better situated and thinking about doing it. We were talking over the holiday about what it consisted of, and the question came up about what you do in the winter - so this was edifying.

Side note - varroa mites are fairly disgusting looking creatures.
