To be honest, I hadn't even realized there was an upcoming presidential election in Russia. It was so clear that Putin was going to be re-elected whenever the election was to be held. Putin (ran as an independent) got 76.7% of the vote, Pavel Grudinin (Communist Party) got 11.8% and Vladimir Zhirinovsky (Liberal Democratic Party of Russia) got 5.7%.

End of facts. Discussion follows.

Out of these three, Grudinin was known not be popular enough and Zhirinovsky is an eternal also-ran. It will be interesting to see how Putin will stay on top. He was born in 1952 and will turn 66 this year. If the constitution is not changed after this term, someone else will have to take the presidency for the following four years. Putin almost certain to be elected again in 2026 and 2030. In 2034 he will be 82. I predict that Putin will retire in 2034. A younger protege will take his place and continue Putin's legacy. Of course, something might happen. But who knows.

There is one big good thing to be said about Putin. He has a positive view of cryptocurrencies.

Sort:

Has Putin always ran has an independent candidate in his past elections? The guy really must be popular.

No, he has represented his party, United Russia before. Yes, Putin has been genuinely popular. But Russian democracy is manipulated in much more direct ways than democracy in the West. For example, in Russia they don't have live debates on television between the incumbent and the opposition candidates. Putin is in the habit of answering questions from the public in televised sessions that last hours but think the questions are quite heavily screened beforehand.

Putin seems like a smart guy with a very high verbal IQ and a sharp sense of humour who is in good physical and mental shape but he is also quite cynical.

Yes, this is true. But I think he does that because he does not want the west to control his country.

The west for a while now have been trying to control countries.

The west for a while now have been trying to control countries.

Are there no other patriots in Russia? How come have dozens of countries been able to have long histories of open and fair democratic processes without foreign intervention?

I don't really know, but maybe those other countries were influenced by the west, but they just allowed the west to influence them, but Putin does not want that I guess.

Damn he will be almost one quarter of a century in office and he was elected once again this russians truly love their ex kgb spy well I understand that the russian economy grew with Puttin in command and if they like that speech evokes the "greatness of the past" so be it pozdravleniya lyudey Rossii. About the cryptocurrencies, Russia help Venezuela to create the Petro to dodge the sanctions of the United States, I'm not surprised that he supports them.

I think the Russian political process is deeply undemocratic in the sense that the opposition is not given a fair chance to challenge the powers-that-be in uncensored live televised debates and without harassment. I don't think a whole lot of Russians even care. Zhirinovsky is a long-time Kremlin sock puppet whose purpose is to split up any potential ultra-right wing opposition. A communist is always allowed to run because it is well-known that communists are not popular enough to be a threat. This time, however, the communist candidate is a strange one. Grudinin is a millionaire openly proud of his wealth and he rejects communist dogmas. The other five candidates gained less than six percent of the vote.

Yes, that's the reason Putin supports cryptocurrencies. He is no anarcho-capitalist, that's for sure.

Upcoming presidential Erection, haha.
You guys are too serious lol.

And he will continue to win just as you indicate him.

In the election to elect the Secretary General of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1934, Stalin pronounced a phrase that has transcended in history and is very applicable to our Latin American political systems: "It does not matter who votes, but who counts the votes"

Actually, I did not want to be the President of Russia. I wanted someone else to be a Russian president and do a lot of good work in front of me, which I am very disappointed now.
