Hanko is in the southwest of the province of Uusimaa, the capital of which is Helsinki. Hanko is about 130 km west of Helsinki.
The town of Hanko is at the tip of the Hanko Peninsula at the southernmost point of continental Finland. The Hanko Peninsula is part of the First Salpausselkä chain of ridges extending hundreds of kilometres to the northeast all the way to Lahti and far beyond.

Hanko has a major port in spite of having a small population of about 8,600. There used to be a steel mill in Hanko but it was shut down about five years ago. Hanko comes to life in the summer when it is a popular destination for boat tourists in the northern Baltic.

The Hanko Peninsula is made up of sand, moraine and gravel. The soil is very poor in nutrients. There are lots of pine forests. My family and I have visited Hanko in June 2015. Our cat, Helmi, was born an hour's drive from Hanko and when we first went to see her and decide whether or not she was to become our cat, we decided to also visit Hanko.

There are many such wooden villas in Hanko. Hanko has been very touristic for over a century. Wealthy people had a lot of such villas built for themselves. The weather is often sunny, particularly in early summer. That is caused by the relative coolness of the sea. There is little evaporation. When we were visiting Hanko, it was sunny only on the Hanko Peninsula.

It looks like a great place to go on summer vacation

Yeah, boaters love it. There are many attractive boutique hotels in old villas at or close to the shore.

I've read so many facts and I've already forgotten most of them :-O
Green and sunny Hanko looks quite promising to visit in summer.

Highly recommended.

I think Hanko is close to the sea, from the picture and your writeup. How do they cope when there the sea overflows? Flooding ?

Yes, the town of Hanko is at the tip of a cape. The sea does not overflow. There are no tides to speak of on the coasts of the Baltic sea.

I'll go there if I have my own boat one day

I always imagine winter and snow when I hear Finland.. like there isn’t a summer season (even though a bit colder than what we’re used to). Looks beautiful though.. and quite sunny! :)

Guao It must be a very quiet place to live, and it is a coastal area, I think I would adapt very well. and as in Venezuela I live in a coastal area, it would not be a problem.

good yes, hahaha I think the cold yes ,,

Hanko must be very quiet in the winter. There is a huge parking area for imported cars offloaded from ships in one of the ports. That windswept area is what Hanko is all about in the winter. Come summer and the town springs to life.

i know something about it so i was excited to know this... thanks for describe... you sharing a amazing post.. carry on ....
