The study, published in the Journal of Health & Place, shows that living near the beach or at least a house with views towards the ocean can improve mental health.
Researchers from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand and Michigan State University see visibility of blue and green space for citizens in Wellington, New Zealand. Wellington is the capital of New Zealand located next to the Tasman Sea, the Pacific Ocean.
Blue space is defined as water, such as beaches and oceans, while green spaces are defined as parks and forests.
The researchers then compared the topography with data collected in health surveys in New Zealand to assess the level of anxiety and moods of people there.
After taking into account the opinions of a number of respondents based on income, age, and gender, the researcher found a correlation between people who in their daily life saw the ocean view with positive mental health
