Parksville Sand Sculpting CompetitionsteemCreated with Sketch.

Last summer, we took an 11-day family road trip from central Saskatchewan to the west coast. Our goal was to make it all the way to Parksville, B.C., located on Victoria Island, so that my husband could recreate his childhood memories of swimming in the Pacific Ocean, searching for crabs and jellyfish, and watching the tide roll in and out with our own kids.

One of his favourite memories was touring the entries to Parksville Sand Sculpting Competition, one of the main events of the Parksville Beach Festival.

We weren't able to reach the coast in time to witness the sculptors in action, but since the sculptures remain on display for several weeks, we were able to enjoy the results. The 2016 theme was "Things with Wings." Here are some of our family's favourites:

If you're looking for a summer vacation destination, I would highly recommend touring out to Parksville. With kilometres of top-rated sandy beaches, a large green space and playground, live music and food trucks (fire-roasted pizza, anyone?), it's a perfect holiday spot. The sand sculpting competition and exhibition, which runs from July 14 to August 20 in 2017, is the cherry on the cake.

Speaking of cake, my prairie kids insisted on eating cake by the ocean during our trip. Thanks DNCE.
