Games always have extras through collectibles, makes multiple plays more interesting when going for them.
DK 1 didn't have the coins though, or at least I didn't see any but they always had the animals for that bonus round for lives. Diddy's Kong Quest brought in the DK coins as a main collectible along the the 15 coin unlocks the bonus area stages.
