One Happy Story - The Citizens Basic Income

When I met Senator Eduardo Suplicy of Brazil back in 2015 in New York at the 14th North American Basic Income Guarantee Congress, he handed me and many others there a little children's book about basic income in Brazil.

For those who aren't aware, Brazil is the first country in the world to pass basic income into law, and did so back in 2004. They just haven't implemented it yet, because it's up to the President to do so, and so far they've avoided it.

I thought it would be neat to somehow make it into a video, so that's what I've done here, including my own narration.

I hope this is now able to reach more people, and if you want the images themselves, I've uploaded them to an imgur album. So by all means, if you make videos and think I did a terrible job with this version, please use the images to make a far better version. Thanks!

And my thanks as well to all those who originally created this story and its images.

So, did the CBI increase their lfie quality? How is it holding up today?
By watching your video, to me it seems like a good thing.
Thanks for posting :)

As mentioned at the top of this post, the law is only on the books, and has yet to be actually implemented in full.

Here's the Wikipedia page about it for more info. (my emphasis in bold)

Basic income has been discussed in modern Brazil at least since the 1980s. In 2001 a law was introduced by Senator Eduardo Suplicy of the Brazilian Workers Party which mandated the progressive institution of such a welfare system. By this move Brazil became the first country in the world to pass such a law. Suplicy had previously introduced a bill to create a Negative Income Tax, but that bill failed to pass. The new bill called for a national and universal basic income to be instituted, beginning with those most in need. The bill was approved by the Senate in 2002 and by the Chamber of Deputies in 2003. President Lula da Silva signed it into law in 2004, and according to the bill it is the president's responsibility to gradually implement the reform. Since then Brazil has started to implement the bill through the Bolsa Família-program, which was a centerpiece of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's social policy, and is reputed to have played a role in his victory in the Brazilian presidential election, 2006.

Great post Scott, and interesting matter.

One remark though; next time cut the music a bit, it's overpowering. I resorted to the images because the music was making my head hurt.

I hope they continue with implementing this.

I actually just started with a series of posts on this subject, maybe we should turn this into a community?

Keep preaching Scott / Upvoted / By the way, my son goes to school at Loyola of New Orleans (-:
