AMERICAN LEAGUE
Justin Verlander, Astros: The 2017 World Series did this 35 year old right hander a world of good. Verlander is pitching a 1.08 ERA with 93 strikeouts in 74.2 innings. He has had 10 quality starts in 11 chances. The Astros are 7-4 in 11 Verlander starts.
Charlie Morton, Astros: Morton spent the first 10 years of his career in the NL where he had a mediocre ERA of 4.54. Now in his second full year with the Astros, Morton is slaying with a 7-0 record and a 2.04 ERA. His strikeouts are up, his walks are down and his WHIP is a career low. These 30 somethings have definitely resurrected their careers.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Jacob deGrom, Mets: In 2014, deGrom won the Rookie of the Year. In 2015, deGrom pitched in the All Star game and the World Series. It’s been a bit of a bumpy ride for him and the Mets since. This year, at age 30, deGrom is having his best year yet. DeGrom is 4-0 with a 1.54 ERA and leading the NL in ERA. His starts are keeping the Mets afloat.
Carlos Martinez, Cardinals: Since moving to the rotation in 2015, Martinez has gone to the All Star two out of the next three years. Now Martinez is having his best year year. His WHIP and hits per 9 are at a career low. While he is only 3-2 on the year, his ERA is less than half of what it was last year at 1.62.
He has the second most WAR for pitcher and 4th in ERA. Up to this point Verlander is without a doubt the front runner.
Astros have a lot of pitching depth. How about kluber? He has the second most WAR for pitcher and 4th in ERA. Up to this point Verlander is without a doubt the front runner but I think that the season is still young and other pitchers might caught up.
