Baseball Cards, Prospect Watch - Starling Heredia, Dodgers, OF

in #baseball7 years ago (edited)

When Starling Heredia was signed, nobody would believe that he was only 16 years old. An international signing from the great baseball nation of Dominican Republic, Starling is quietly becoming a name spoken in hush among baseball scouts.

Standing at just over 6' and growing, Starling is a massive human being at 220+ lbs. You'd look at him and think that he's not much of an athlete. He's big. He's burly. He reminds you a little bit of Dan Vogelbach, a slugger for the Mariners who hasn't quite panned out as billed. In fact, there are many chunky homerun hitters in the minors who never adjust to major league pitching. Andrew Knapp's immaculate minor league bat is quiet in the majors.

Still, there is something quite intriguing at hitters that show this much promise.

Monster Power

Not much is known about Starling Heredia because he didn't play State-side until June of this year. He played on and off in the Dominican League last year, and his efforts were pedestrian. It was good, but not enough for international scouts to rank him high on their list.

I think he saved his best efforts for the minor league. Debuting in June 24 of 2017 in the Arizona Rookie League, Starling quickly hit two home runs and two steals on three attempts. He also hit for average, hitting .436/.500/.795 with two triples and two doubles for nine RBI before getting promoted to Ogden Pioneer League. His hot streak continues, hitting 9-19 with two homeruns and three doubles. These are monster numbers for a rookie.

Elite Athleticism

Not to get too critical about social perceptions, but when we see someone big, we automatically think that they are not all that athletic. Not so with Starling Heredia. Did I mention that he stole bases at a 66% rate in the rookie league?

Usually guys this big gets stationed at the first base, where there isn't a lot of ground to cover. Starling plays all three outfield positions and plays them well. He's a great athlete for his size and is developing as a promising five-tool player. He has speed, power, defensive, sprays the ball offensively, and a great arm to boot. He'll be an exciting player to watch for in the years to come.

Because Starling is a relative unknown in the MLB and MiLB to the fans, his baseball cards have not been so popular. Which means they are available for cheap! I expect these cards to skyrocket, and when his Bowman Chrome autos are released, it will go very high.

This one's good, too:
