in #barcelona6 years ago

As fans are awaiting the clash against Chelsea next month in the UEFA Champions League 1/8 Finals, here are the paths to the previous League titles that the Catalans won.

(Part I) - 20/05/1992 - Sampdoria - Barcelona: 0-1 (After Extra Time)

This was the last tournament before the competition was re-branded as the UEFA Champions League. The Catalans won their first UEFA Champions League title in a very exciting game against Sampdoria. The Serie A team had won the Italian title the previous season and the forward line was very strong with the likes of Roberto Mancini, who was the captain for Samp, and Gianluca Vialli.

The Italians beat Rosenborg and Honvéd in the first and second round and after that won their group against Red Star Belgrade, Anderlecht and Panathinaikos by losing only once.

On the other hand, FC Barcelona won the title 4 times straight between 1990 and 1994 with the likes of Julio Salinas and Hristo Stoichkov who won the Ballon d'Or in 1994. Barca won against German teams Hansa Rostock and Kaiserslautern and went to win their group also against Sparta Prague, Benfica and Dynamo Kyiv.

The final came on the 20th of May 1992. Both team had an excellent squad. After 90 minutes without scoring a goal, defender Ronald Koeman scored a free kick that would forever cement in the heart of the fans of Barcelona and would start their dominance in Europe.
