Balkano survivor pt9: Medieval fortresses are still useful

in #balkanos8 years ago

This morning, I drove all around my city to take some fresh photos of medieval fortresses around it.

Today, they have converted them for other purposes and some of them are still renewing. I guess, my city was well protected in the history, from the sea and from the land. The first photo is not mine, it is from sibenik-info.hr, the GIF and the map are courtesy of Google Earth, all the rest is mine!

So, the fortresses are located here:

- St. Nicholas Fortress (1)

This fortress is at the sea, at the entrance in the port of Šibenik. It was built in 1525 to defend the city and the channel from the attacks of Venetian's ships. The tide was too high this morning and I couldn't get in the fortress to take some photos of the inside. This is the photo from the coast:

Today, we use this fortress for rave parties and concerts for young people!!!

- St. Michael Fortress (2)

This was actually a castle, not a fortress. It was built in 12th century on the foundations of the Roman fortress. It has been broken and devastated several times in the history. This is one of the most important monuments of the history here. It has been renewed in 15th century, later in 17th century, 18th century and now it has double walls and they are renewing it again.

Today, we use this castle for cultural events, city manifestations and some concerts.

- St. John Fortress (3)

This fortress was built on the 115 meters of evelation in 17th century on the place of old St. John's chapel. It was built to protect the city from Turkish invaders of Ottoman Empire.

This fortress hasn't been renewed, so today, it is mostly used by high school kids who come here to drink, smoke weed and have sex!

- Fortress "Barone" (4)

This fortress was built in the same time as St. John fortress, but they renewed it few years ago. So, it was useful for defence from the sea (Venetian ships) and from the land (Ottoman Empire).

Now, when it is renewed, it looks very nice and there is an elite restaurant in there!

@dumar022
You just give yours position away.
Now, they going to Nuke the place. The bunker won't helps. I mean the cellar won't helps.

I'm always a sucker for a fort, and i'm spoilt in Spain for it! But i really hope to be able to discover those forts on the Croatian coast :) thanks for your article!

thank you @herverisson, for this nice reply
